It’s one of the most common things we hear from new clients. And honestly? It’s completely understandable. Apple has spent years building a reputation for security, and macOS does a genuinely decent job of blocking known, documented threats.
But “decent” and “sufficient for your business” are two very different things.
What macOS Actually Protects You From
Apple’s built-in security tools, including Gatekeeper, XProtect, and the notarisation system, are designed to stop known malware from running on your device. They check apps against a list of recognised threats and block software that hasn’t been approved by Apple.
That’s a solid foundation. But it’s not a complete picture.
What macOS Doesn't Do
This is where holes in macOS (just like any other OS!) begin to appear in contrast to what you need to ensure your business is fully protected from:
- Phishing sites. macOS won’t stop a convincing fake login page from loading in your browser. If it looks legitimate, it loads.
- Suspicious browser extensions. A rogue extension with access to your passwords or banking sessions can slip through without a flag.
- Zero-day malware. New threats, by definition, aren’t on anyone’s known list yet. Apple can only block what it already knows about.
- Mac-specific attacks. Mac-targeted malware has grown steadily in recent years, from adware hijacking browsers to sophisticated tools designed to steal credentials straight from the keychain. Attackers know Mac users tend to feel safe. That makes them a more attractive target, not a smaller one.
Three Questions Worth Asking Yourself
If you use a Mac for work, be honest with these:
- Do you download files from the internet? PDFs, invoices, software, anything.
- Do you use your Mac for banking, email, or business systems? Almost certainly yes.
- Do other people use the same device? Staff, family, visitors on a shared machine multiply the risk.
If you answered yes to any of those, there is a meaningful gap between what Apple provides out of the box and what your business actually needs.
